HISTORICAL FACTS ON PROPERTY
Shortly after the creation of Habersham County from Cherokee Land (1817), homes were being built by those whose primary residences were in Savannah and Charleston. Escaping malaria and the heat were two reasons for moving to the mountains in the summer season.
In 1849, on 140 acres of land purchased by retired General Duncan Lamont Clinch, a summer home for the family was built. Clinch was a hero in the Seminole Wars and the War of 1812, a highly respected soldier with a distinguished Army career. He also served as a member of Congress. The family enjoyed the old home place at the end of Lamont Lane; the foundations still stand.
Just east of 211 Lamont Lane, near the edge of New Liberty Road, there is a large rock which tradition calls "the place of the first gathering of lawmakers". Those gatherings occurred before there was a courthouse in Clarkesville. (Tri-County Advertiser. June 16,1927, IIInteresting Bits of Habersham County History" by Miss Addie Bass.) Within a few miles are historic houses built in the 1840's. One was called Sleepy Hollow, now Fenwick Wood, and others are Woodlands, Blythewood and Sunnyside.
Regarding this house at 211, it is built of western hemlock with logs 6"x12". There is a feeling of security and sturdiness within the logs. Surrounded by hundreds of beechs, native hemlock, white pine and tulip poplars, the setting is on
a 1400 foot ridge with a winter view of the mountains. There are wildflowers of many kinds and many trails marked in the woods.
